These Are the Theater Formats Avatar: The Way of Water Will Release in

When Avatar: The Way of Water hits theaters on December 16th, it’ll arrive with more versions than any motion picture in history. In addition to being released in 160 languages, you’ll be able to view the Avatar sequel in any format you prefer:

  • Standard
  • IMAX
  • Premium large format
  • 3D
  • High-resolution
  • High frame rate

And that doesn’t even consider all the variable sound systems it’ll be released supporting.

As for the high frame rate (HFR) version, Cameron revealed back in 2020 that the movie will be in 48fps. Long before production began there was speculation about 60fps, but it looks like 48fps was settled on in the end. The only drawback to this is that the HFR version may be forever limited to theaters as the current 4K home technology is limited to supporting 60fps and can’t playback the 48fps content, which is why we don’t have a HFR version of The Hobbit trilogy at home. Ang Le’s previous two movies were released in 60fps (and in some places 120fps) and the 4K UHD Blu-Ray disc versions support the 60fps version. With the change to 48fps, we may not get to see that at home with the Avatar sequels.
